Literary festival added to Independence celebrations

The Aunty Roachy Festival will feature tributes to folklorist Miss Lou.

IN an effort to develop and promote Jamaican narrative in most of its forms, the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) will be staging The Aunty Roachy Film, Television and Literary Festival next Tuesday, August 5, at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre.

Commencing at 12 noon, the festival will kick off with a book fair themed, ‘Lunchtime book stew’. This will feature book launches, play and dramatic readings, an open mic poetry slam, the JCDC creative writing showcase, and a tribute to Professor Edward Baugh.

Patrons will be able to view television segments, which will feature tributes and reflections to folklorist Miss Lou, while the film segment will showcase an collection of shorts.

The festival will also see presentations from publisher Kelly Magnus; writers Roland Watson Grant, Jean Lowrie-Chin, Basil Dawkins, and Mel Cooke as well as actors Deon Silvera and Christopher ‘Johnny’ Daley.

The Aunty Roachy Festival will run till 10:00 pm and is free of cost.
